Volume-Price: Fannie, Freddie, MGM and The Sands (NYSE:FNM),(NYSE:FRE),(NYSE:MGM),(NYSE:LVS)

Stocks making strong gains Monday on heavy volume include Fannie Mae (NYSE:FNM), Freddie Mac (NYSE:FRE), MGM MIRAGE (NYSE:MGM) and Las Vegas Sands Corp. (NYSE:LVS).

Let’s kick it off with Fannie Mae (NYSE:FNM), which took off an impressive 8.65% to $1.13 per share as 90M shares traded hands today.  Folks, that is more than 2X the normal daily volume of 41M.  The interesting point to this stock is that this is the second day in a row that the stock has made some impressive gains on volume that is unusually higher than normal.  This could be a turnaround point the stock.

Freddie Mac (NYSE:FRE) is basically in the same boat as Fannie, posting its second straight day of impressive gains on heavy volume.  Freddie’s gain today was more impressive than Fannie, as the stock posted a 14.29% gain to $1.44 a share as nearly 46M shares traded hands.  Not quite 2X average daily volume of 25M, but pretty close.

Moving on from the mortgage stocks to the Vegas stocks, MGM MIRAGE (NYSE:MGM) made solid gains today of 6% to $10.66, which is up $0.60 a share.  With 33M shares running the floor today, MGM remains one of the more actively traded stocks on the NYSE.  This company s still swimming in a sea of red in terms of earnings, but that is sort of to be expected given the economy.  If you are buying this company, it is probably a bit more of a contrarian play.

Bringing this close, Las Vegas Sands Corp. (NYSE:LVS) also had a nice day, posting 7.2% gain on +$1.10 per share to close at $16.31 a share.  Volume today was a little lower than average at almost 27M versus the average if 38.6M.  The chart follows a similar pattern set by MGM, but over the last 9 months it has outperformed MGM for price performance.
