Catching up with 2010's Wild Card Stocks (VG, C, STEM)

Wild Card Stocks

Back in December WallStNation.com listed Vonage Holdings Corp. (NYSE:VG), StemCells, Inc. (NASDAQ:STEM) and Citigroup Inc. (NYSE:C) as the "Wild Card Stocks of 2010".  Since that time Vonage (VG) shares have increased 9% and StemCells (STEM) is the only loser down 1%.

In just over a month we check back in with those holdings and see that Vonage shares have gained the most in the group:

Ticker Company Dec 24th Price Jan 15th Price Gain/Loss % Gain/Loss
STEM  StemCells, Inc.   $       1.37  $       1.36  $     (0.01) -1%
VG  Vonage Holdings Corp.   $       1.42  $       1.55  $       0.13 9%
C  Citigroup Inc.   $       3.35  $       3.42  $       0.07 2%

This past week Vonage Holdings Corp. (VG)reported in its Form 8-K that John Rego, Executive Vice President, Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and Treasurer will be leaving the Company later this year.

StemCells Inc. (STEM) hasn't done much in the last month, again StemCells is engaged in the development and commercialization of cell-based therapies to restore or aid central nervous system and liver affected by disease. The Company's primary drug candidate, HuCNS-SC, is presently in Food and Drug Administration clinical trials for the treatment of neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis in children.

Citigroup (C) of course has been the most active of the three and there has not been a single day where the company didn't make the headlines or finish as the most activity traded stock on the NYSE.

Citigroup said this week they may cap cash bonuses for 2009 at below $100,000 according to a new report from the Financial Times. The 2009 bonus pool is expected to be similar to 2008 levels, which was relatively low compared to previous years. Citigroup will likely pay a large part of its executive bonuses in the form of stock that cannot be sold for many years.

The New York based bank may pay up to 40% of its bonuses in the form of deferred cash and stock and provide the rest in non-deferred cash and IOUs, which will turn into common stock in April of this year. According to the report, Citigroup is still working out the details of its bonus plan.

Best of luck to all of you playing these stocks, stay tuned this week when WallStNation.com will deliver another set of "Wild Card" stocks to watch in 2010.  Thanks for reading.
