Chesapeake Energy: A Natural Gas Play
A look into Chesapeake Energy Corporation (NYSE:CHK) by Rohan Pease, he considers Chesapeake one of the premier natural gas drillers in the world and a stock worth buying.
(SeekingAlpha.com) I consider Chesapeake Energy (CHK) to be one of the premier natural gas drillers in the world, and the Company's CEO, Aubrey McClendon, is doing a fine job of securing his foothold on what I believe will be an energy revolution. I wrote a post back in late January of this year recommending purchasing CHK at around $24-$25 per share on the basis of natural gas storage moving below the 5-year average.
Well, natural gas has since risen above the 5-year average to the tune of approximately 18%, using this week's net injection of 94 Bcf, and CHK is still in the low to mid $20's. Due to all the bullish factors this week regarding natural gas and CHK specifically, I believe now is as good a time as any to add to my position of CHK that I picked up in late January.
Natural gas has so many great characteristics: cleaner burning and cheaper than crude oil and on par with coal when considering coal's burn rate. I could go on endlessly, however informed readers and investors out there probably already know as much or more than I when it comes to natural gas's advantage, all of which have been highlighted with the recent catastrophes surrounding coal and crude (i.e., Massey's (MEE) track record and BP's (BP) spill. Now is the time for natural gas to shine in the national spotlight, and its futures contracts are picking up quite well relative to crude oil as of late.
I consider Chesapeake Energy one of the best ways to invest in natural gas. They own the best producing properties, and now Aubrey McClendon is racking in money to pay down debt and enhance his best producing fields with foreign capital:
