Palm vs. Apple: May the Best Smartphone Win

Palm Inc. (NASDAQ:PALM) is set in mid-September to begin selling paid applications for the Pre smartphone through its App Catalog, taking on Apple Inc.'s (NASDAQ:AAPL) App Store with a 70-30 revenue split for developers and Palm respectively.  So, bet on the Pre or iPhone, is it really a fair match?


You bet it is and the Pre is stepping up to the plate for an all on war Alien vs. Predator style. Software developers will be able to start charging for applications downloads to Palm Inc's high-profile Pre smartphone with the company's launch of an e-commerce beta program set to start in mid-September.

Apple's iPhone vs. Palm's PreDevelopers will still have the choice of giving apps away for free, but Palm said on Tuesday that software providers who want to charge for Pre apps will get 70 percent of revenue from the sale. The remaining 30 percent would go to Palm in an arrangement that mirrors Apple Inc's app store.

Consumers will be able to easily pay for their purchases using Visa Inc and MasterCard credit cards, according to Palm.
